Enjoy the holidays and we will see everyone in the New Year.

December.......

The pace is quickening, and time marches on. This week our spelling words are "colour" words. They are: green, yellow, red, brown, blue, pink, purple, white, orange and black. Once again it is very important that your child be reading regularly each night. I find keeping a routine this time of year is helpful. It keeps the children's minds off Christmas and makes the time go faster.
This Thursday, Dec. 11th is toque day. the following Mon., Dec 16th is red and green day.
We begin practicing in earnest for the concert this week. Have a good week!

Busy, busy!

Yikes! No Blog this week. This past week, although only four days long, seemed to go on for ever. Great job for getting the homework done up quickly boys and girls.
Thursday evening we had a lovely group of pre-schoolers and their parents come to our " Welcome to Kindergarten" meeting. It was very nice to meet everyone.
The spelling words for the week of the 18th are good, have, read, any, did, or, too, Tuesday, woke and spoke. Keep on reading those books and recording those titles boys and girls. You are all becoming better readers and quite INDEPENDENT:)
I think the weather is going to be a bit warmer this next week, let us hope.

Short Week!

This week is indeed a short week for your children. There is no school for students on Thursday or Friday but the teachers will be here for professional development. So homework will need to be tackled right away and back in by Wednesday. Tomorrow, Tuesday is PICTURE DAY. We are scheduled for 9:30 am.
Spelling words are: make, will, am, me, pretty, same, sap, flap, tip, drip. Remember to see that your child is reading every night or day. Some of them are in the " 20's" already! :)
Have a nice Thanksgiving.

October is here!

This week's spelling words are: she, with, are, he, funny, more, sip, lip, flip, and trip. In math we are still working on patterns this week, increasing patterns with numbers. We are also practicing counting by 2's, 5's, 10's, frontward and backward.
Some students are not bringing in their Reading Logs. I realize your child may have a long book and need a couple of nights to finish, that is fine. They really do need to be encouraged to read every night though and to change their books regularly.
Book orders will go home Wed. or Thurs. and will be due October 16th.
School Pictures will be taken October 8th, with the Grad. pictures on the 7th.
There is no school for students Oct.10th and 11th, teachers have professional development those days and of course Monday, Oct. 14th is Thanksgiving.
Please be checking your child's head for the "undesirables". Also if you have not sent in your "student fees", please send the $7.00 for your child's agenda for now, thank you.
Have a great week.

Days are shortening.......

Welcome to my Grade Two Blog. Here I will list the weekly homework , upcoming events and various "goings-on". This week our spelling words are: like, cat, to, and, dog, I'm, rock, sock, dock and clock. Our spelling test is usually on Friday. Homework is due on or before Friday. Please see that your child is reading every night. There is a letter regarding this in the homework duotang.
Thank you for working your way through all the paper work in your child's agenda and returning it. Just a reminder that there are still a few more forms to come back along with the student fee, $10.00 or $20.00, depending if you choose to pay for half a year now or the full year. Please check your child's head for lice. Unfortunately they have survived yet another season.
Also, if your child is going some where other than home or to the "Club", please be sure to include the civic address of the home they are going to. The office makes up the bus lists and they do not have time to look them all up. Sometimes we have drivers "filling in" from away and they need these addresses.
This Friday there is a movie playing at GMCS Cinema. Check your child's agenda for the name and time. Have a great week!

It will be the last day for the cafeteria, but we will be eating in our rooms as it looks like K-8 will be all eating at the same time, it would be "crazy" in the cafeteria!
Our class trip to the Anchorage Park is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18th, rain date 20th. Please have permission slips signed and returned by this Friday. Wednesday, June 19th the students will be dismissed at 10:40 for the Graduation ceremony. Friday June 21st is also a half day, not yet sure what time buses will be leaving. Upcoming Literacy Assessment

Time is certainly passing quickly. We did get a start on our homework in class today so hopefully no one will be feeling overwhelmed.
This week's words are: their, start, kind, hurt, pick, only, so, been, clean and right. The class is doing well overall with the two-digit addition with regrouping. Many of the children have come up with their own strategies for adding, if it works, then "leave them to it".
Our Literacy Assessment begins on Thursday the 23rd. I'm sure you know the children do much better when they are well rested. Hopefully they will be healthy and "ready to go", come Thursday. It is really important that they be here first thing in the morning as we start shortly after 9:00 and work in 45 minute sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, every day until the 30th. We do the reading comprehension first and then work on our writing, fun, fun, fun.
The Carnival orders/ money are due Friday 24th.
Until next time...

Wonderful Weather!

This weather is most welcome! We have a four day week this week and next. Friday most of the teachers are travelling to the mainland for Subject Council. Monday May 6th teachers have GMTA in the morning followed by Professional Development in the afternoon. This makes it a bit of a rush with homework but the students are quite used to this by now. The spelling words are in their agendas and duotangs as usual. Please encourage your child to read every day/night. They are all doing well but it is so easy to regress if they slip back into not reading regularly.
Ask your child about the school garden. Mr.s Angie Russell has some wonderful plans in the works and we have planted some marigolds for a little plot out in front of the school. If you have anything in the gardening line (tools, pots, etc.) that you would like to donate to the school, it would be greatly appreciated.

Mud Season

For this week's spelling words please see the list in your child's agenda or homework. PLEASE have your child read regularly. It is also a great idea to have a novel on "the go". One that you can read to your child Children/ if they are within a few years of each other. Be sure to stop reading now and then to make sure they understand the story. Often we assume they know what a word means but when asked, they really don't.

The playground is a cold spot. Please don't put those winter coats away yet. We still need hats and mittens too.

mid-February

This week will be short and intense. Our spelling words are: had, don't, some, them, by, very, old, went, another, and chug. We only have three nights to complete our homework and learn our spelling words. PLEASE make sure your child is reading nightly. It is so beneficial and it is really exciting when the boys and girls share what they are reading with me when they come in each morning.
Please send ski pants, hats and mitts with your children. There is a lot of snow on the playground and if they want to play in it they need to be dressed for it.
We just received letters from our penpals on Long Island. This is very exciting for us all. Be sure to ask your child about this. We are busy writing replies. We also got a photograph so we know who is who.
Have a great week, enjoy the increase in day light.

Busy week.

This is shaping up for a busy week. Tomorrow we will be having our scheduled WITS assembly. This begins at 1:00 pm. and involves the RCMP, students from highschool and other members of the community. We are working together in hopes of bringing a greater awareness of some strategies that one can use in certain situations when feeling bullied, scared or threatened. This will be about an hour long and involves some activities, stories and a " swearing-in" ceremony.
Homework needs to be completed and in, on or before Friday. Many boys and girls are not reading regularly every night. I have been doing some Reading Records and I can tell some need to get back on track. This is not a contest, but we will have been in school 100 days, come Friday and I think everyone should have read at least 80 books/chapters.
Speaking of 100 days, we will be celebrating our 100th day of school on Friday. Your child can bring in his/her project any day this week, before Friday that is. We will have them on display in the Great Hall/ Cafeteria Friday afternoon.
Spelling words are in your child's agenda, they are a bit trickier this week so be careful. I will be sending the book order on Friday in case you need a few more days.
Thursday afternoon we will be having a little Valentine's Day celebration. We will exchange cards and have a little snack. If you'd like to send anything along it would be certainly appreciated, drinks would be great too.
Please check your child's head for .... you guessed it. They are back.
